Mr. Syarif: The Savior of Purwaceng Plants in Dieng

The mountain air is refreshingly cool. A ray of light on the eastern horizon indicates the imminent sunrise among the sea of clouds. The majestic Mount Sindoro is further enhanced by the addition of a thin fog, which adds to the beauty of the morning scenery. In the vicinity of this attractive location, Mr Syarif and his family are engaged in the preparation of equipment for deployment in the field. The village of Patakbanteng, Kejajar, Wonosobo Regency, is situated in a mountainous area. Mr Syarif has chosen farming as his profession. In addition to cultivating a variety of vegetables, Mr Syarif also farms Dieng purwoceng to meet the needs of his family.

Mr Syarif has been engaged in the cultivation of purwoceng since 2005. Initially, Mr Syarif's interest in farming purwoceng was driven by his concern for the plant. The limited number of farmers who are willing to cultivate purwoceng makes it a rare specialty crop, particularly given that purwoceng can only thrive in the natural environment of the Dieng mountains.

The cultivation of purwoceng demands a high level of patience and dedication, as the harvest can only be obtained after a year of planting. The process begins with seed sowing, which takes approximately three months. The plant is then transferred to a larger plot for enlargement until it reaches the point of readiness for harvesting. It is also essential to provide the plants with friendly weather support. During the dry season, the plants require more water intake to prevent them from dying of dryness. Regular weeding of wild weeds is necessary to ensure optimal growth of the purwoceng plants.

We chose to work with Mr Syarif because of his dedication to producing pesticide-free purwoceng plants using organic fertilisers and hygienic post-harvest processing systems. Mr Syarif's primary objective is to foster the growth of a larger purwoceng farming community and to encourage local governments to prioritize the welfare of purwoceng farmers. This will ensure the long-term sustainability of the plant and prevent its extinction.
